R-454B vs R-410A Refrigerant
A practical engineering comparison for HVAC contractors, distributors, and facility managers. Understand ASHRAE classifications, GWP regulations, and equipment compatibility before servicing or purchasing.
R-454B · 22 lb Cylinder
A2L mildly flammable refrigerant blend formulated for next-generation residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems. Features Left-Hand (LH) reverse thread connection.
R-410A · 30 lb Cylinder
A1 non-flammable HFC blend widely used across established residential and light commercial HVAC equipment. High-pressure operating characteristics with standard 1/4" right-hand fittings.
Side-by-Side Technical Comparison
| Technical Parameter | R-454B (Opteon XL41) | R-410A (Puron / Suva 410A) |
|---|---|---|
| ASHRAE Safety Group | A2L (Lower Flammability) | A1 (Non-Flammable) |
| Global Warming Potential (GWP) | 466 (~78% reduction vs R-410A) | 2,088 (High-GWP baseline) |
| Standard Net Cylinder Weight | 22 lb (Factory-Sealed Cylinder) | 30 lb (Factory-Sealed Cylinder) |
| Cylinder Valve Thread | Left-Hand (LH) Reverse Thread (CGA 164) | Standard Right-Hand (RH) 1/4" Flare (CGA 166) |
| Operating Pressures | Very close to R-410A (-1% to +2%) | High Pressure Baseline (~380-450 PSI discharge) |
| Lubricant Compatibility | POE (Polyolester) Oil | POE (Polyolester) Oil |
| Drop-in Replacement Status | Not a drop-in replacement. Strictly prohibited in existing R-410A systems. | Use strictly where specified on equipment nameplate. |
| AIM Act Phase-down Status | EPA compliant for new residential AC installations post-2025. | Subject to progressive EPA production/import allocation reductions. |
Can R-454B replace R-410A in existing equipment?
No. R-454B cannot be used as a drop-in replacement for R-410A systems. Because R-454B is classified as an A2L mildly flammable refrigerant, it requires specific electrical containment, safety shutoff valves, integrated leak detection sensors, and dedicated A2L-rated recovery and vacuum equipment.
